Sheertex Semi Opaque Rip-Resist Tights

Fresh and modern, our Everyday Collection offers a sleek solution to your closet clutter. This design includes 3/4-inch straight-edge panels, adjustable shelves, and half-overlay flat face doors. Best of all, it’s available at a price that’s equally as pleasant as its appearance.

No-Nonsense Super Opaque Control Top Tights

The material is fairly thick and almost completely opaque, and the legs have a nice stretch to them, which provides comfort. These well-priced tights are soft and stretchy, and they’re available in a wide range of sizes. The tights do a great job at elongating legs by hugging curves in all the right places. They’re fairly opaque, but hints of skin still peek through (check out the option below from Calzedonia if you want fully opaque tights).

Calzedonia Soft Touch Tights

The Hue Super Opaque Tights with Control Top were soft and stretchy, but the control top was too stretchy and not constrictive enough for any shaping effect. Those in the market for control-top tights would find these ineffective. Ultimately, we decided that though these were cooler than many others, they weren’t worth the higher price.

Though these tights are mostly wool, they are machine-washable (which is convenient, since no one loves hand-washing their tights). Most of the tights we tested are made of nylon and elastane or spandex and are of a similar denier, which measures how thick the fabric is. We selected tights in the 70 to 90 denier range that should provide adequate coverage and durability. The Swedish Stockings Alma Rib tights are a soft pair made of nylon and elastane, but they don’t fit as well as others.

However, this does mean that there is very little stretch in the waistband. When pulled apart, the length of the tights never returned to its original starting point. Therefore, it is likely that they will get worn out relatively quickly.

While they have good elasticity along the leg, the waistline is not as stretchy as the other options listed above. Our tester recommends these for people who wish to smooth out their stomach, or simply don’t have much of one to begin with. Compared to more opaque options, sheer tights don’t put up as big of a fight against wear and tear.

The Best Black Tights That We Tested and Didn't Rip

These tights come in four sizes to fit people 5-feet to 5-feet-11-inches tall and 100 to 240 pounds. The Hue Super Opaque tights come in five sizes designed to fit people 4-feet-11-inches tall to 6-feet tall and weighing 100 to 300 pounds. These tights are hand wash only, which may be a downside for some, but is common when it comes to tights. Just like a little black dress is a wardrobe staple, so too are black tights.

Best Sheer

Most testers thought the tights—made of 90% nylon and 10% elastane—would be good on a cool day but maybe not for a 10-block trek in a blizzard. If you regularly rely on tights to keep you warm in inclement weather, or if you tap them as a layering piece, we suggest you try the Wolford Merino Tights. The semi-formal shoe matches the sleek aesthetic that comes with tights.

The elasticity is also an indicator that one size will probably fit a wide range of body types, but Wolford nevertheless a size range of XS-2XL, which we’re very grateful of. That being said, we'll buy more because we can't deny their ability to elevate any outfit. “Tights are an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe,” says stylist Michaela Leitz, and I couldn’t agree more. To shopping for black tights easier (and ensure you'll find pairs you actually like), we identified 28 top-rated styles and put them to the test in our lab.

Both of these materials are incredibly stretchy, strong, and abrasion resistant, and have the ability to maintain their shape regardless of exterior force. If you are looking for stretch and durability, then spandex and elastane are the fabrics to go for. The Spanx Tummy Shaping Tights and the Commando Sexy Sheer Tights are great examples. Each has an impressive elasticity that not only molds around your body, but has notable longevity. If you are looking for comfort, look for pieces that include cotton or wool like the Wolford Merino Tights.

Wirecutter is the product recommendation service from The New York Times. Our journalists combine independent research with (occasionally) over-the-top testing so you can make quick and confident buying decisions. Whether it’s finding great products or discovering helpful advice, we’ll help you get it right (the first time). The building stands out as the only Black-owned apartment hotel on the strip, offering both short-term stays and reservations of a month or more. It symbolizes racial discrimination in housing, stemming from government redlining practices that restricted where Black residents could live. Additionally, it evokes the iconic “Red Cars,” trolley cars that transported people from downtown Los Angeles to Venice Beach in the mid-20th century.

That lighter knit also means they’re extra-cool and breathable—better suited to a chilly autumn or spring day than to a frigid winter day. In the tear test, the tights performed relatively well against velcro and jewelry, only showing a few minor runs. They did, however, finally rip when we pulled a finger nimble over it.

To be fair, that is a literal knife cutting a hole into tights, so as long as you avoid sharp objects, the tights should last a long time. Additionally, some tights featured a “control top,” or a longer, thicker waistband to provide more support in the stomach area. While this feature isn’t necessary, I found the control top could help the tights stay in place over the course of a day. These tights are prone to slipping throughout the day, as is the case with other fleece-lined leggings I’ve worn in the past.
